Allergic reaction?: Could be an allergic reaction to something, could indicate anemia, or could be a symptom of a tongue condition (geographic tongue, candidiasis, etc). See if you have tried any new foods lately that could irritate your tongue. If it is red and irritated i would see a dentist to determine the cause.

FastidiousOralHygien: If the white film on your tongue doesn't come off when you brush it with your toothbrush then you may be dealing with a case of thrush. Thrush requires a medicated solution that you swish around in your mouth.  Your doctor should be consulted for evaluation.  If the film goes away with the toothbrush then regular oral hygiene including tongue cleaning and use of a mouth wash twice daily (minimum).

Bite?: If you know it's a bite for sure, use warm salt water rinses. That will help keep the area clean, and will will help reduce your pain. If you're not sure how this problem developed, visit your dentist for an evaluation.

Observe for a while: If it doesn't hurt doesn't mean that you should careless.
Observe for a couple of weeks.If still there, have a biopsy done by a doctor. (dentist). If grows quickly, go before it grows too much.

For people who are allergic, this scenario is even more likely.

Three things-: Otc pain medication such as advil, motrin, aleve (naproxen) or what you normally take for a headache, suck on ice chips, and time. There is nothing else you can do. If your tongue is swollen, taking  benedryl may help as well.
