Controversial: Some studies have shown a higher incidence of diabetes in patients on statins, which appears to be dose dependent (higher doses may confer higher risk). This may just be because the people who need higher doses of statins may be more likely to develop diabetes, rather than the medicine causing diabetes. I would take it if recommended by your doc and try to follow a healthy lifestyle!

Statins: A high cholesterol level should be cared for with statins. If you do not have diabetes you need to carefully control your cholesterol to a point that the level is normal. If you don't you might develop diabetes. You don't want that!

Low risk: Statins do raise the risk of diabetes slightly, however you should not discontinue the medication without consulting your doctor, You may discuss using a different statin. See this site for info.

Depends on lipids: First, you need to control your blood glucose.  That will help your triglycerides.  You and your md should evaluate your overall cv risk.  Statins are proven to reduce risk of heart disease, and most people with t2dm should probably take them.  Fibrates lower triglycerides, and raise HDL a bit.  Fibrates have not been proven to lower heart disease, however.  Talk to your doctor about this.

my total choesterol is 285. my ldl is 177, my hdl is 71, my triglicerides is 165. no diabetes female age 64. would you reccommend a statin?

Need more info: Though diabetes is a risk equivalent for cardiac complications and is important, there are other risk factors that must be considered before starting statin therapy. Talk it over with your physician.

Carotid plaque: You have plaque in your carotid arteries but not enough to block circulation to your brain. However, it's a marker and I recommend having a treadmill stress test to check for coronary artery disease. Also I recommend taking low dose aspirin daily unless there's are contraindications. Finally I would consult a vascular surgeon to advise you about follow-up, frequency of future carotid ultrasounds,

Need more info: How high is your cholesterol? What other risk factors, if any, do you have? How likely are you be compliant with a rigorous dietary regimen? It would be prudent to consult your doctor and may be a nutritionist to see if diet and exercise would work for you.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

if i am having both myalgia and diabetes from statin therapy, should i stop statin therapy and go for non-statin cholesterol lowering medicine?

Most Likely: You should definitely see your doctor and discuss this with them. Fortunately, there are many choices in medication for illnesses and disorders now. If one medication seems to be causing side effects, other medications - in different drug classes - may be better choices.
