RICE: Yes. You should start with rice as a home treatment. After 48-72 hours you may switch to heat (instead of ice). As your pain starts to subside you may add stretching as tolerated, and massage. Once pain is gone, then gently return to activity as your strength and proprioception may need time to recovery after the injury, and you don't want to further injure yourself by going "all out" too fast.

Swelling: Typically people will have considerable swelling after an ankle sprain.  This engorgement is often perceived as "warmth."  after the swelling diminishes the perception is now the area is cold.  The "environment" just has to normalize and so will the temperature.

i had a severe ankle sprain two years ago. i went to a doctor but no x-rays were taken. it still gets painful and swollen at times depending on physical activity and i suspect with certain types of footwear.

Typical: Depending on the grade of the sprain, recovery may take weeks to months and tight follow up with Ortho and physical therapy are needed. Some patients remain with chronic symptoms and unrelated pathology may contribute. A podiatrist may help as well by recommending orthotics and/or fitted shoes.

Minimally 12 weeks: Without a complete history of your injury and sports activity, the non-displaced fractures will take a minimum of 6-8 weeks to heal (assuming there are no complications in healing) and in general soft tissue injuries such as the an ankle sprain will be longer about 12 weeks (= 3 months).  Again, that is assuming that you are compliant with treatment regimen prescribed by your doctor.

i had an ankle sprain two months ago. now i am having pain in p tibial. i have been wearing inflatable stirrup ankle brace for five weeks. the doctor said i should continue wearing itbut the physio said ditch. who's right?

Watch out: Not all ankle sprains are the same. If you have a high ankle sprain, some of the deeper structures going up above the ankle area between your fibula and tibia can get injured. This can take longer to heal. You also want to make sure the ankle is not unstable. If no to both above, then you do need a good ankle strengthening (proprioceptive) program.

Post injury rehab: Just as important as the treatment or surgery is the rehab of the extremity. The isolation of the part will weaken the muscles and hurt your balance. Several weeks to months of physical therapy often done to help bring you back to normal, and, even then, you'll have to ease back into the sport or activity or risk reinjury of the area(s).

No: Usually not, however an ankle stablizer such as an air cast will help.

Accepted Answer

Ankle sprains: Nope. Ice is for the acute period right after an injury to limit swelling and thus pain.  It would have no therapeutic effect this far after an injury.
