is it possible for your spleen to enlarge as mono is heading out of your system? it wasn't enlarged before but i'm worried. is that not how it works?!

Peaks early: With this disorder, you usually see this side effect by the end of the first week of symptoms (which is when they come in for diagnosis) with a gradual decline over the course of the illness. By three weeks in I am seldom ever able to feel an enlarged spleen, even on kids who had it earlier.

my son was diagnosed with mono today last week he lifted a heavy nightstand i am scared that maybe he caused a spleen issue without us knowing. dr felt spleen today said it didnt feel enlarged could it just be festering?

: Spleen rupture is a rare complication of mono if one has splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) and engages in a full contact sports or suffers other abdominal trauma. Splenomegaly does not happent in all mono infections but maybe half of them.

Not likely: The splenic enlargement due to mono should subside in a matter of weeks.  In the meantime avoid activities that may risk trauma to the abdomen in general and spleen in particular.  If the enlargement has not subsided in three months, consult your doctor.

Wait: The spleen is usually enlarged with infectious mononucleosis (barr epstein virus infection).
The spleen can rupture if there is trauma to the spleen when it is enlarged.  Lifting of course depends on the weight of what you lift.  Give your body time to heal and the spleen to return normal size and this may take 3 months.

Depends: It depends on how big it is... If it is big enough for you to feel... You need to see a doctor and avoid any activities that may put you at risk for rupture of the spleen.

Avoid trauma: Placing yourself in a position where you could possibly cause trauma to your side or abdomen could place you at risk for injuring your enlarged spleen.

Yes, please!: The spleen is one of the most common organs injured following car crashes.  It is common for the spleen to enlarge with mono;  this makes you more susceptible to splenic injury.  Wearing a seat belt will decrease your risk of trauma to the spleen.

Yes: There are a wide variety of conditions which can result in enlargement of the spleen.

Yes: An enlarged spleen is seen in 50 to 60 percent of patients with infectious mononucleosis and usually begins to recede by the third week of the illness. I don't believe taking garlic will alter the course, symptoms, or signs of infectious mono.

If your infection: is controlled, your spleen enlargement will eventually resolve.  But it might take a few months.  If you are having difficulty breathing, it could be from another cause.
