An elliptical: Is a pretty good machine for those that cannot tolerate walking/running on hard surfaces.  I'd give it a try.

Varies: It varies somewhat based upon surgical technique used and surgeons preference, but usually in the 8-12 week range.

The best exercises: and related equipment are the ones we are most likely t use.  My personal choice is a treadmill because you can adjust the speed, listen to ipod, etc.easily while exercising.  Peace and good health.

when i workout on an elliptical, the machines always tell me my heart rate is around 200. even when i'm not trying nearly at all. why? and is it bad?

Trust your body : if you feel fine then don't worry. Besides, the machine may not be accurate. You can always get a more accurate heart rate monitor but honestly I tend to advise a young person like yourself against it as it has no bearing. Watch a TV or read a book on there, work up a hard sweat and, as long as you're feeling well, enjoy your workout and ignore the heart rate.

Yes: Overall the elliptical machine is cardio machine that is low impact on the joints and back if done correctly.   Swimming and water aerobics are other forms of low impact exercise that should be ok with herniated discs.

Elliptical use is OK: Using an elliptical machine is not likely to place more pressure on lumbar discs than standing.  Disc pressure is thought to be highest when sitting and leaning forward.  Adding reason to minimize sitting for prolonged periods and using good posture.  In the absence of weakness, or  numbness in the lower extremities, be as active as possible and strengthen your abdominal musculature.

minor pain in glute & back of leg from running injury in sep. only hurts when i stretch deeply & pain is minor. i do squats, elliptical fine. ortho said its a pull & keep stretching or do pt. is pt worth it? i can stretch on my own? have ski trip...

It is surprising to: many how effective PT can be in isolating and treating specific injuries. Their knowledge and experience is extremely beneficial in many situations where one would assume that simple independent home therapy would have been enough. I would see them for an evaluation and recommendations especially if you are going to be going on a ski trip where further injury is a possibility.

Running: Both are effective, but it would best to use the elliptical machine on a hot day in air conditioning rather the get dehydrated running long distance outside.

Running: Both are effective, but it would best to use the elliptical machine on a hot day in air conditioning rather than get dehydrated running long distance outside.
