Possible retina prob: This could be the ocular form of migraine which can occur without headache 
but it might be a retina problem.

Chest complains: Do not neglect such complains . Keep an eye on his symptoms . More frequent occurrence and complains , definitely need to see your pediatrician. When you visit just let your doctor know.

See opthalmologist : there are a number of reasons why this could happen some people have low levels of fluid in the eye leading to flashes this could be a retinal migraine in any event you must see an ophthalmologist not an optician but an MD for the eye. They can test and see if there is any structural abnormality.

Migraine: You have described a typical pattern for occipital migraine, a condition affecting the circulation to the occipital lobe - the visual information processing part of the brain.  These are benign, annoying but come from nothing and lead to nothing.  Most are over in 5 minutes to 1 hour.  If you get another, cover one eye, then the other and you will notice the sparkles in the same 1/2 of each eye.

The latest research has not determined the exact cause and some believe that the “brain dysregulation” leading to a migraine is causing it.

Tia: If a specific visual field in one eye is affected--assess carotids and have ophthalmology assess central retinal artery and see if embolism there.  If both eyes affected, consider injury to ophthalmic processing center in brain (stroke).
