See a physician: It may reassure you to know that the hip joint, the biggest ball and socket joint in the body, simply can't just pop in and out - that is physiologically impossible and if it were possible, would cause tremendous pain and disability.  Most likely you have a subluxing iliopsoas tendon (snapping hip syndrome), which can cause popping sensations, but can usually be treated conservatively.

Possibly: It depends on the cause of the popping.  You can have a condition called a snapping hip that is usually caused by tendons or muscles snapping over bony prominences in the hip area.  These conditions do not cause permanent damage that would affect you when you are older.  If the popping is due to something loose in the joint (a loose body) that could affect you if not removed.

Labral tear?: It sounds like your hip started hurting with no history of trauma.  Is that right?  It could be a labral tear.  An exam, xray and mri would help diagnose.  If that is what it is you should avoid hip flexion (squats).  Also a hip injection into the actual  hip joint (not the bursa on the outside of the hip) would help.  Try anti-inflams and see if they help.  Instead of ibuprofen, maybe naprosyn.

Rest, evaluation: Progressive hip pain with overlying redness and heat is very concerning. No more running till we figure this out.  Check yourself for fever now.  If you have fever 101.5 or up go to ER.  If no fever have this looked at tomorrow with careful exam by primary care. Ortho referral may be necessary.  Motrin ok  for pain tonight.

Popping: The tensor fascia latter muscle and it's tendon the iliotibial band or i t band travels from the hip to the outside of the knee. The i t band crosses the hips greater trochanter. In conditions where there is tendinitis or edema of the i t band or bursitis of the greater trochanter or both, the it band as it crosses the greater trochanter while walking can make a popping sound. See your sports medicine doctor for assistance with stretching exercises.
