hi.. i have a soft tissue swelling on the back of my neck with a lump.  my neck is also a bit stiff. what could be causing this?

Exam needed: A physician would have to examine your neck and palpate the lump in order to make a diagnosis. The neck stiffness may or may not be related. Occasionally soft tissue accumulates at the base of the neck causing a "dowager's hump" which can be seen in certain endocrine disorders like Cushing's syndrome or corticosteroid use

my neck xray findings:there is straightening of the cervical lordosis without compression deformity or listhesis. disc spaces are maintained.no bony encroachment of neural foramina noted. no focal prevertebral soft tissue swelling. what does it mean?

: Translation= your neck is straighter than expected because the muscles are tensed. The process does not show abnormalities, only stiff muscles.

Cervical: Sounds like an entirely normal X-ray. All cervical spines straighten out in cray or MRI done supine. Alternatively could be indication of some cervical muscle spasm causing splinting and thus straightening of the spine.

Yes it will help: You need to show it to your doctor or go see an ENT specialist who can examine this swelling. A ct can be a confirmatory test which you doctor will order if needed.

Many issues: Can cause swelling in the soft tissues such as injury that cuases inflammation, infection, scaring due to past injuries, foreign bodies like splinters, etc.

No: If you know that the tissue in the nasopharynx is benign enlargement of lymphoid tissue, then it is not possible that you would have dizziness and memory issues.  If your ENT doctor visualizes, a mass in the back of the nose at 37 years of age, I would operate and remove that tissue to identify exactly what the pathology is.  CAT scan of the head would also be appropriate.

i have 2 interval osteotomy screws that extend 7 mm beyond the plantar cortical margin. could this cause mild soft tissue swelling in plantar surface?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Potentially yes.  If your osteotimy sites are healed, it would be reasonably simple to take the screws out and see if that helps.

See PCP / podiatrist: Best thing to do is to have your PCP or a podiatrist take a look at the swelling if the swelling has been there for a while. Otherwise, if this appeared as a result of some trauma, it should get better within a few days.

how bad is subcutaneous soft tissue swelling at the medial aspect of the ankle ? i've had this for a yeah now. can this turn in tumor cells?

Accepted Answer

No: Subcutaneous swelling in medial ankle region without palpable mass suggests non specific swelling secondary to localized venous insufficiency leading to the swelling.  Tumor would continue to progress with larger area of swelling..  This type of swelling would benefit fro leg elevation if nonospecific.
