Hydrate well.: Stay well hydrated (at least 8 - 8 ounces glasses of water per /day). Try to get in 5 servings of vegetables ; 4 servings of fruit per day. Stay physically active w regular exercise.  There are a number of over the counter laxatives that can be taken orally to help pass retained fecal matter.    Please discuss your hemorrhoids w your physician. If this is not sufficient. Disimpaction is sometimes.

Distended rectum: The urge to defecate or have a bowel movement is a spinal cord reflex from distention of rectum from stool. This sensation can be ignored but further distention will result in another "reminder" until you evacuate, ignore it to point you can't hold it and have accident (leakage/soiling/incontinence/encopresis) or get impacted with hard stool.

"Normal" stooling: This has been answered on healthtap often. The rule of thumb, based on bell curve analysis of the american population, shows a "normal" distribution of stool frequency from 3-4 bowel movements a day to one movement every 3-4 days. Stool texture,  volume, dietary considerations, age, metabolic disease (low thyroid, low adrenal), irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual cycle, may vary within this norm.

Some concerns: Your age of 23 suggests a number of possibilities: 1) irritable bowel syndrome; 2) adult hirshprung's disease or rectal dyssynergia with pelvic floor dysfunction; 3) relatively acute procto-colitis due to infection, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.; 4) ano-rectal disorders (like anal fissures, rectal prolapse, large prolapsing hemorrhoids with pain); 5) neurologic damage.  Get checked please.

Constipation: if this is a one-time problem, try milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide). If it is a chronic issue, you should initially try increasing the amount of fiber that you take in, and adding a fiber supplement such as Metamucil. If you do that, you should increase your fluid intake also. If this is a change in your bowel habits, you should see your doctor. Good luck.

Probably not: Stool frequency is variable, from 1-2 per day all the way to 3-4 days between stools.  If you have no other symptoms its probably safe to watch.  If your nervous, see your doctor.

In general one should stool once daily but this could range from as many as 3 times/ day to as little as 2 or 3 times a week. Bottom line one shouldknow what normal is for one.

Water; exercise: Many safe, easy strategies to deal with constipation are also associated with the production of more gas. Increasing fiber in diet, taking psyllium would both do this. Doctor's say "You know you are eating healthier when you have more gas!" Of course, water drinking and exercise would be good options. Also, most people end up identifying socially acceptable ways to pass gas. Best wishes:)
