Garments which support the chest (including the breastbone and ribs all the way down to the upper abdomen (women can find BRAS which do this and are commonly available!!

have been diagnosed with slipping rib syndrome. no one seems to know much about it and im told theres not much i can do but wait to see if it improves. is this accurate? any suggestions?

: Many clinicians don't believe there is such an entity as a slipping rib. You don't describe your symptoms. If you require a second opinion, consult a thoracic surgeon to evaluate your symptoms &amp; rib cage.

Difference: Subluxation of a rib refers to true dislocation from its attachment at a vertebra or the sternum. Slipping rib syndrome refers to the ribs that are not attached (floating ribs) but move somewhat out of position. True rib subluxation/dislocation is considered to be very uncommon despite the claims of many therapists who perform manipulation therapy on people.

Different : Neither can be seen on Xray as too subtle. Slipped rib syndrome is often a missed diagnosis as it is not taught in many medical schools. Possibly: You didn't mention any diagnostic studies of your spine. Plain dorsal spine xrays and/or an MRI are advisable if symptoms of midback pain and tenderness are significant and persistent.

: Pain can radiate to the back on the same dermatome if the nerve under the rib is affected with the fracture.

Yes: All of the above listed symptoms may occur. Including tenderness with palpation of the rib.  Depending on he area involved pain usually occurs due to irritation and impingement of the intercostal nerve above the affected rib or pressure on the costochondral joint itself.
