Could be tight shoe: If the numbness is on the outside of the toe it is probably due to compression of the nerve from a tight shoe.

Pinched nerve...: Probably. That part of your big toe is innervated by the nerve that exits the fourth lumbar vertebrae (L4) in your lower back. It's fairly common to see this but if it persists go to see a doctor. Orthopedic is the specialist or a neurologist but it will probably go away on its own if you didn't hurt your back too bad.

i have this slight numbness on the upper part of my left big toe.this started after i had a dance.is it possible that this is due to nerve compression?

Yes: Most likely due to a pinched nerve. Usually it will resolve by itself if the compression is not chronic. Avoid doing the activities that cause this. I do recommend you get evaluation if the numbness gets worse. See your doctor.

Nerve irritation: Numbness or tingling, similar to "pins and needles" is most commonly caused by nerve irritation of some sort.  Diabletes for example can cause nerve damage and peripheral neuropathy.   A pinching nerve in your back, hip, knee or ankle can cause toe numbness.  Sometines, poor circulation, affecting the nerves can be the cause. If  this persists, check with your doctor.  Good luck!

? Running issue: Your issue could be related to running.  With chronic repetitive trauma like long distance running, you can develop swelling in areas of the leg which can compresses nerves or blood vessels.  I would try to minimize running and ice the leg.  If no improvement, see a doctor.

Trauma to nerve: When you stub your toe it is actually blunt force trauma to all the tissues in toe. The injury may not be bad enough to fracture bone  but it can result in contusion-a 'deep bruise'  to the soft tissues-skin muscle, tendon and nerves in the toe. Unlike the other tissues, nerve healing can take months. If the nerve was not severed, as happens in cuts to toe, the numbness should resolve.

Could be a few: Things, including you were possibly wearing a tight shoe, a nerve is compressed, likely either deep peroneal nerve or a nerve in your lower back.

Nerve pain: Very often the nerve on the top of the foot is injured. Shoes can compress the nerve and cause. Remove all pressure and give it a few days. If it persists see your podiatrist.
