why when i'm sleeping in my sides, the arm i'm sleeping on, my hand goes numb. this just started a month ago, and it happens every night all night?

Nerve compression: The numbness in your hand is probably due to compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow, it will give you numbness of the little finger and ring fingers.You may olso be compressing the median nerve and that will give you numbness of the middle, index and thumb.You need to learn how to change positios very frquenly in order to avoid continuos compression of the nerve.

Carpal Tunnel: Probably carpal tunnel syndrome. There is treatment available. Nerve conduction studies  for severity and confirmation.

Yes: Sleeping hard means being so deeply asleep that the person is unresponsive to stimuli which would ordinarily cause some postural adjustment or actual awakening. If a wrist is markedly bent or the elbows markedly flexed or the shoulder abducted, this could happen.

Carpal tunnel synd.: There a re many potential causes, but by far the most common is carpal tunnel syndrome (cts).  Cts is a compression of the median nerve at the wrist and many patients wake up with hand numbness.  Usually initial treatment is a night spilint.  If this does not work, surgery may be indicated. No: These are 2 different diagnoses. Tingling in the hand at night comes a nerve impingement. A torn rotator cuff can cause shouldered pain and limited mobility of the shoulder.

Splints: Flexion of the elbows as wells as wrists as we sleep puts stress on the ulnar and median nerves respectively which contributes to cubital and carpal tunnel.

It is difficult to maintain proper positioning at night without some type of either wrist or elbow splint depending on the nerve involved.
