will pilocarpine help with dry eyes from sjogrens? overnight dry eyes is my worst symptom even with plugs & eye drops.

Minor help: Try applying plain eye ointment into each eye prior to sleeping.  This will coat the eye and protect it during your worst part of dryness.

Need eye doc: First, I would recommend an evaluation by an ophthalmologist. Sjogren related dry eyes can be severe and will require aggressive attention. For now, artificial tears over the counter (preservative free is better so you can use it very frequently) during the day and lubricating ointment at bedtime. Lotemax/restasis helps get inflammation under control but does little for lubrication. Good luck.

i was dignosied with chronic iritis, raynaud's disease, chronic dry eyes. possible sjogrens  syndrome. all blood work came normal what should do?

May need: See rheumatologist to better evaluate this.  Sometimes labs can be negative with sjogren's  and sometimes we have to consider minor salivary gland biopsies to confirm the diagnosis.

i have severe dry eyes from sjogrens i also have allergies i find zyrtec (cetirizine) way to drying. does flonase have the same drying effect as other allergy meds?

Accepted Answer

No: It is a corticosteroid and it will  help the allergies as it is antiinflammatory. It does not drying like the antihistamines. You can discuss this  with your physician.

Accepted Answer

Not likely: This treatment is not standard nor scientifically validated.  It is not likely to be helpful for sjogren's syndrome because the problem with that is inadequate tear production.  Punctal plugs, artificial tear supplementation and Restasis would be better choices for this problem.

Yes: your condition is more aptly called Sicca syndrome instead of Sjogrens in the absence of joint involvement.

Education: Probably would start by simply telling the person that sjorgens is a spectrum of diseases. Give an analogy for example autism comes on a spectrum from barely functional to very highly functional geniuses. Your disease comes in a spectrum and so it may pronounce itself in multiple ways. Ultimately your friends will understand and ignorant people won't care to understand.

Could be: The symptoms you describe can very well be related to sjogrens. This disease can be diagnosed with certain laboratory data but often requires a biopsy of the  salivary glands located in the lip area (minor salivary glands). This can be done easily under local anesthetic in the office by ENT md's.

The : The most frequent cause for dry eyes has to do with the enviroment . When mouth or other mucosa are effected the problem might be systemic . The diagnosis is a clinical diagnosis and the test are simple, a schirmer test for the eyes , that is done by the eye doctor with a small adsorbent paper and for the mouth the old question of are you able to swallow and chew a cracker with out water . The lab data might help to increase the suspicion of the presence of the disease
