i have chronic sinusitis (opacified sinuses).  i started sinus rinse but have ear pain, shooting pains in my head,  and vertigo after rinse. continue?

Accepted Answer

No: Occasionally sinus rinses will force bacteria or fungus into other areas including the brain. They are not recommended. Gentle saline spray may help or topical steroids. The sinuses can be difficult to treat and sometimes require drainage. Ask for an ENT opinion.

what is it? i had a popping sound and  sharp ear pain after using sinus rinse

Sinus rinse -ear pop: Could be  that the rinse  also drains into the Eustachian tube, as both the sinuses and middle ear  drain into the Eustachain ( hence post nasal drip). There may be, due to congestion, increased fluid in the middle ear as well. When you rinse your sinuses  you are increasing the pressure in the Eustachian tubes , opening it and making your ears pop ( like when on a plane).  f/u /w/ doc

i used neilmed sinus rinse and i guess i pushed too hard and got some in my ear. since then i've had horrible ear pain and a headache.

See ENT: For the most part, the saline rinses work well - but if you firehose it up the nose, it can go into the ear through the eustachian tubes.  Time will probably take care of this, but if it's giving you a lot of discomfort, i'd probably see an ent.  I'd be curious to hear how our ENT colleagues would treat this!  good luck!

They certainly can: When using the sinus rinse, it is common for the irrigation fluid to contact the nasal end of the Eustachian tube, which can pop the ears.  Some people can feel fluid in the tube and even feel it in the ear.  If this is especially uncomfortable, try spraying the rinse less vigorously or changing the angle that you hold the bottle.

after using neil-med sinus rinse, i have a lot of crackling inside my ears.  what is this?  and should i be concerned?

Sinus Rinse : You likely introduced some air into the sinuses and middle ear during the treatment. There is a always a danger that you also introduced some bacteria or other infectious agent at the same time, but it sounds like you cleared some of the blockage and the treatment is working. If it doesn't seem to be improving after a few more days, you might want to check with an ENT specialist.

i was using a sinus rinse and something in my right ear popped. what could it be?

Eustachian tube: If the sinus rinse reached the back of your nose (nasopharynx), it is possible that the rinse reached the eustachian tube (channel in the back of your nose that communicates with the middle ear).  The rinse may have traversed that tube and caused your ear to pop.  Make sure you do not have fluid in your middle ear space.

Allergies?: You may be sufffering from nasal allergies. These need to be addressed to provide you with long term relief. If you do not have hypertension, you can take an over the counter antihistamine with decongestant, otherwise, see an allergies.

Bad idea: Using a sinus rinse to clean ears would be a bad idea.  If you are having a problem with ear wax  ask your pharmacist for otc options. Sinus rinses are great for cleaning out the nasal cavity and washing allergens out the nose.

i have ringing in the ear. then had fess/septoplasty. using neilmed sinus rinse 6 times a day. tinnitus now worse and can't smell - is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Yes, rinse 1x/day: First question is how long after surgery?  If 6 weeks or less your eustachian tubes are swollen that will increase awareness of tinnitus.  Secondly, the 6 saline rinses are irritating the mucous membranes.  Do it once, max. 2x/day.

my ear is blocked (pressure and lost hearing) after using the neil med sinus rinse.  i tried yawning to pop it and a q-tip.  how can i unblock my ear?

See below: Considering that this occured after the sinsus rinse, you may want to see your doctor.  You may need to go on antibiotic or other medications.
