is a 6 cm simple ovarian cyst something to worry about? 25. my said its benign filled with fluid. she said it will go away on its own. it causes me pain though. should i get a second opinion? i read online this is too big for a simple cyst?

: If your (GYN) physician has seen the imaging study and the cyst is a simple one (without complex echogenic structure within) the 6 cm cyst will eventually resolve spontaneously, and may take a followup imaging study if the pain persists. With a less than 10 cm cyst with no internal echo structure, a biopsy is not yet indicated.

OK: The definition of simple ovarian cyst is in comparison with complex cyst. Simple cyst is diagnosed with ultrasound, you will see a cystic structure in the ovary with echo-lucent (very clear). Very oftern, it is a non-ovulated follicle. It will disappear naturally without treatment. The complex cyst, on the other hand, with echogenic area inside of the cyst, needs further investigation.

Ovarian cyst: Yes, simple ovarian cyst can resolve on its own, however it is prudent to use a trial of birth control pill. The pelvic ultrasound can be repeated after six months on the bcp. If on the other hand you start experiencing pelvic pain, a trip to your doctor will be prudent for reevaluation. Goodluck.

: No, that would be exceedingly unusual. By definition, a cyst is filled with fluid and a simple cyst has no features that make it suspicious. Cysts come and go normally with your cycles and typically represent eggs at some stage towards ovulation. If a simple cyst persists over several cycles, continues to grow, or becomes symptomatic , it might need further management but cancer is still unlikely.

Important: First, are you 47 years old? I mean no offense but 50% of ages given on HealthTap are untrue. If 47 is correct the risks are torsion (twisting) and rupture. Any cyst larger than 6 cm. is a significant risk for these , both of which require emergency surgery. AT age 47 the chance of cancer, while not terribly high, is  still plausible. Hence, needs removal. Good wishes.

No: An ovarian cyst by itself does not cause spotting - but conditions thqt cause cysts can also lead to irregular periods.

Will likely go away: Physiologic simple cysts that are under hormonal influence will come and go often, sometimes by a slow leak, sometimes by a rupture and sometimes by your body essentially absorbing it.  Unfortunately rupture can cause pain and sometimes it can bleed, but there is not much you can do to prevent this sequence other than to prevent cyst formation, possibly by using birth control pills.

are there medications other than surgery to decrease the size of large benign 13 cm simple ovarian cyst or at least prevent it from getting bigger?

No: There are many reasons a 13 cm cyst needs to be removed by surgery: unknown type, rupture, torsion,... often the cyst can be removed without removing the ovary. It would be w-a-y outside standard of care (at least in the US) to "observe" this rather than remove. If it hasn't been removed for tissue, how do you really know it's benign?

Mild p/o pain: Slight post op pain due to cyst fluid irritation but most of this will be aspirated by the laparoscopist at the time of the procedure.
