50: Unless you have a strong family history or symptoms of decreased urine flow, screening for prostate cancer usually begins at age 45-50.  A blood test called a "psa" is checked, as well as a rectal exam to palpate, or feel, the prostate gland are done first.  If there is a problem this is usually followed up with a prostate ultrasound.

U mean refractory?: There r many factors to consider here. It sounds as of u mean to say that he was told that the prostate cancer is hormone refractory?  This means that the hormone blocking agents they have tried, which block testosterones ability to feed the prostate cancer, are not effective and his psa continues to rise. Ask urology/medonc maximizing anti androgen and androgen blockers.Ctx&provenge are next line.

Here are some ...: TURP is done to surgically relieve bladder outlet obstruction, not to treat prostate cancer. But, the pieces of resected prostate tissue are microscopically examined and at times prostate cancer(P-Ca) will be found.  If P-Ca is found, definitive Rx with radical prosttectomy or radiation or cryotherapy may be done for "cure", or just watch it &amp; see. If recurring, ask Doc if Rx or no Rx is needed

If you like these seeds, enjoy. Don't expect magic.

Doubtful: This debate has been around for a while but currently most in urology and oncology believe that vasectomy itself does not increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.  It is likely that they have a higher likelihood of earlier prostate cancer detection though.  This is attributed to having a relationship with a urologist starting  at a much younger age than other men.

No self-exam: but at 19 it would be beyond unusual - what makes you worried about it?  Guidelines vary among societies (some don't recommend screening at all) but it would be done with a manual prostate exam and a bloodtest for PSA.
