Shoulder pain: While weightlifting could be from the acromioclavicular joint, the rotator cuff, the glenohumeral joint or a combination of all three. First proper mechanics are needed. Second one must make certain that there not any underlying issues. Finally often reducing the weight helps. And spending some time strengthening the smaller  muscles of the shoulder girdle such as building up rotators and the biceps and triceps and the trapezius.

Let me advise you: It depend on the magnitude of the shoulder injury, if it is minor injury, that okay to keep working out expect the shoulder. If the shoulder injury serious one i believe you should and concentrate on your shoulder recovery.

See doc: Could be contusion,tendonitis or bursitis.Ibuprofen 200 mg three times aday with food,range of motion exercises,ice to shoulder 3 times a day for 20 minutes,if no improvement see your doc or sooner if worsens

Many possibilities: was there trauma? is there pain associated with the grinding? generally grinding implies mechanical rubbing of non smooth surfaces. these can be articular such as cartilage or labrum for example. should be evaluated with MRI.

any tips on how to prevent shoulder pain during sleep?

Sleep on your back: Avoid sleeping on your shoulders, or sides.  Try to keep arms down to your side.  Don't sleep on your stomach.  To help keep your arms to your sides, and not above your head, wrap your arms with  soft pillows and safety pin them on.  This will weigh your arms down a little, and you will be less likely to sleep with them above your head.

Unclear: I'll say that "in front of the clavicle" close to the breastbone is the sternoclavicular joint.

The pectoralis major muscle attaches to the "front" of the clavicle, but i've never seen a strain of that muscle hurt in that location.

Other small ligaments and muscles attach to the clavicle, but i just can't imagine anything that causes pain only when sitting.

Muscular strain?: Muscular strain is a consideration.  Also atypical chest pain of exertion, especially if the pain is the left shoulder/arm and only occurs with walking/resolves with rest.  Have your doctor examine you to determine etiology of this pain.
