two weeks ago our steel double garage door fell on my foot. initially it was extremely painful, but i could still walk. it went blue and purple and then it went away. it only hurts with touch and is still swollen. could it be broken?

Could be,: a stress fracture, an x-ray would tell, usually heals on it's own, takes time though, you want to rest it as much as you can, avoid putting much weight/stress on that foot, and see your doctor, best wishes

Foot: Bone takes 4 to 6 weeks to heal. Swelling can last for several months. Keeping the foot elevated as much as possible will reduce the swelling. Also things like smoking and diabetes reduces oxygen and nutrients to the feet which may increase the healing time. Your knee may hurt due to the weight of the boot which will take time to get use to. You may benefit from a heel lift in your other shoe.

SOUNDS BAD: You need an x-ray. Go to abfas.org to find a board certified podiatrist; certified in RRA, in your area. Or, an orthopedist specializing in foot/ankle.

Could be, maybe.: Typically, if a fracture is suspected, there is a history of some activity that would make the fracture suspect. Swelling is found in fractures along with pain and often bruising, but not always. There are quite a few causes for swelling of the foot, most depending on location. All will have a typical clinical pattern. Best to have the foot examined to isolate the true cause of the problem.

Ugh Oh.: It is time to have it re-evaluated. Some fractures do not show up on the early x-rays. IT certainly sounds that there just might be a stress fracture that is a bit unstable. To remove all doubt, have another x-ray taken,

Icing/evaluation : Swelling is a part the inflammatory process and with broken bone(s), this can continue. Your primary care physician can evaluate your condition. General measures to reducing swelling can help along with avoiding pressure over the area (standing/walking etc). If it persistent and pain/trouble walking, then an evaluation by your doctor would be needed.

Swelling: I would suggest  discussing with your surgeon. Promptly  usually it is just the swelling from your knee "draining" to your foot with gravity and will usually resolve with time and elevation. But it could also be a DVT ("blood clot") which can be dangerous, particularly if a piece breaks off and goes your lungs (pe).
