Numbness : Numbness that shoots from the big toe up the lower limb and triggered by movement of the toe sounds like neuritis.  Neuritis is caused by irritation or injury to a nerve.  In this case, the involved nerve could be one of the digital (that's digit as in toes) nerves to the big toe, the medial plantar nerve, or the posterior tibial nerve.  Since feet take such a beating, from things including the activities we do and the things we wear on our feet, it is not surprising that the nerves in our feet can be injured.  Digital nerves can sometimes become swollen, causing something called morton's neuroma.  The medial plantar nerve can be hurt by badly-fitting arch supports.  The posterior tibial nerve can get pinched at the ankle, something called tarsal tunnel syndrome.  Foot nerves can also be made more liable to injury by other conditions, like diabetes and vascular disease.

Podiatrists, who specialize in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the feet, may be a good resource for foot nerve injuries.

both my feet have a numb feeling and aches terrible all the time with pain that shoots through my toes. feels like i have pins and needles when i bend my toes, burning sensation . i have uc and am on asacol 1200mg 3 times daily. should i see a doc?

Sounds like: NEUROPATHY,,,,and a neurologic examination is indicated,  This requires a hands on examination and possibly more "sophisticated" neurologic testing (Nerve conduction studies)

From elevated sugars: a common complaint of someone who has diabetes is that they may notice worse numbness tingling after meals (especially high carb/sugar). See a family dr/internist for a work up

Sharp pain: If they are lace up shoes they may be placing to much pressure on dorsal cutaneous nerve or another. Loosen the laces and avoid shoes that places to much pressure. If it continues see foo and ankle dr.

Big toe pain: The big toe nerve pain can come from nerve impingement in the lumbar spine area, peripheral nerve impingement, diabetic neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy.  You would need an emg/ncv to get more information about the nerve pain. You should seek help from a pain management doctor.  You might benefit from a comprehensive evaluation and treatment.

Possibly Spine: The shocklike sensation you describe is sometimes referred to as lhermitte's sign.  There are a few different neurological problems that can cause this sensation ranging from mechanical injury to the spine to problems with the spinal cord itself.  This warrants a neurological evaluation.

Nerve pain: You may have a pinched nerve. You should try back stretching exercises. If no relief is noticed in 2 wks, go to your doctor for evaluation of your back to see if you need to get imaging study of your spine to confirm diagnosis. Feel better:)
