A few days, but...: It can take 4-5 days or more. If it seems slower, ask your doctor about treatment with valacyclovir rather than acyclovir. Val gives much higher blood levels and is the main drug recommended for treating shingles. Acyclovir can work in especially high doses, though. Discuss with your doctor. Good luck!

Viral infection: The medication you've bee prescribed is Not a customary treatment for herpes zoster infection. I generally prescribe Valtrex™ Or similar. Your treating MD may be treating you for a bacterial infection you've been diagnosed. Check with your doctor to have a clarification, or seek a second opinion.

5-7 Days: Usually the shingles rash (and pain) may last 5-7 days but could be longer. Even with mild pain it is recommended to be treated with anti-virals to prevent long term problems such as post-herpetic neuralgia (long term nerve pain).

Yes in time: Shingles is a viral infection the inflames the nerves and causes blisters along the course of the nerves that are affected it can cause a lot of pain and if the lesions are scratched , very common, there may be scarring . It should fade in time.

No: Shingles is confined to the nerve distribution of whatever nerve is infected (we call these 'dermatomes'). So the rash will spread out as a band only on one side (L or R) of the body.  It may take a couple days to fully spread out and become red, blistery &amp; painful. Hopefully seeing a doc before that happens could limit or prevent that. I've shut down 2 cases where the pt came in just before rash.

Different: Shingles and petechiae have completely different presentation . A trained medical professional  should be able to differentiate them. If in doubt, go to see your doctor for further evaluation.
