Ultrasound the best: 1. History and physical exam. If your history and examination are suspicious that it might be a dvt, then you need a 2. D-dimer. A blood test is done. If it is very low, you don't have a dvt. If it is high you might have a DVT and you need an 3. Ultrasound scan. This is the gold standard test. The ultimate way to check for a DVT is ultrasound.

Plantar fasciitis?: With the limited info given, i can only guess plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the fascia/arch ligaments. This can be quite painful and persists for months without proper treatment. Stress fracture is also a possibility, or metatarsal syndrome (carpal tunnel equivalent in your food/ankle).
If it is bothersome, consult doc, podiastrist for proper eval and treatment...

See below: This could be the tarsal t syndrome, like the carpal ts in the hand. The tarsal tunnel is located on the inner aspect of the foot, nearer to the heel.

Something is wrong: Anytime you have pain, there is something wrong. There are a few possibilities. It could be the foot pain comes first, i.E plantar fascitis and as a result you are compensating or walking differently and then getting the leg pain. Knowing if you are flatfooted or have a high arch would help but in either case an orthotic might help. A nerve problem should also be ruled out.

: You may have a Bakers cyst but I cannot rule out phlebitis by the way you describe. Superficial phlebitis can be taken care with warm compress several times a day until it resolves. 
If the swelling persists and bothers you, you should see your doctor for a definite assessment.

Help: Aspirin is a form of an anticoagulant that lessens the chance of a blood clot.  However, the most important thing you can do is make sure that you don't have a DVT in your leg.  Will likely need a venous doppler ultrasound.

You did: exactly the correct thing! You may have had a temporary blockage in the vein..in any event if there is no recurrence mention it at your next routine health assessment!

hi there, i am experiencing a sharp pain at the back of my knee. im not sure if its a muscle, vein, or tendon. i did some exercises relating to jumpers knee. the pain moved to my entire leg. it started when i overstretched. please advise.

Strain vs tendonitis: Jumper’s knee refers to patellar tendonitis on the front of the knee. Not sure what you did regarding the back of the knee but hamstring insertions can become strained and the knee capsule could have been stretched. Try oral and topical NSAIDs, and go easy on the stretching for a few days. An elastic/compression knee brace could be helpful during this time. It would be doubtful if serious injury.

Neuropathic Pain: Have you had a nerve conduction study or EMG?  
Was there a rash there several years ago?  I'm wondering if this could possibly be a post-herpetic neuralgia.  If there is a history of shingles on that body part, this could be the underlying cause. 
Consider seeing a Neurologist and/or a Pain specialist and maybe a podiatrist. The origin of the pain could be your foot.
