Many causes: Obesity, viral infection, and alcohol are the 3 leading causes. There are many others. A complete evaluation would likely reveal the cause but as an isolated blood test, it says little except that there is inflammation in your liver.

Not the key: Your and your physician need to find the cause. Despite the pop claims, food choice is seldom the key to health. You need to find out whether this is due to meds, alcohol, lack of exercise, hepatitis B / C, hemochromatosis, Wilson's, autoimmunity, antitrypsin deficiency, a myopathy, or something else. Find cause : There is no medicine for liver inflammation. First the cause of the problem has to be identified. It could be an infection, cancer, obesity, or toxic reaction to medications.

my sgpt level came to be 59. all other lfts are normal and hepatitis tests are also negative. i have no symptom of any disease. why sgpt is high?

Many things: Sad to say, doctors see mild elevations in theses liver function tests all the time, most of the time we never know why as when rechecked they normalize.  But many things like recent alcohol exposure, trauma to the liver, supplements, medications(Tylenol (acetaminophen) in particular), excess body fat, and low grade viral infections all can cause rather asymptomatic liver test abnormalities.

my sgpt is 104. it's very high. i don't cosume alcohol or any such things. only i consume oil in small amount but still my sgpt is high. kindly provide me a cure and tell a reason why it's so high?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your SGPT is not too high. You may need to be tested for chronic hepatitis B or C. If your are overweight, losing weight is imperative.

Fatty liver or else?: There are 2 kinds of liver enzyme abnormalities--that signal disease of the liver cells or of the bile ducts.  Abnormal liver tests may reflect fatty liver, too much alcohol, toxic exposure, occupational exposures, lot's of viral infections, metabolic problems, familial liver diseases, as well as problems with gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas.  Start with blood tests to identify possiblities.

More info needed: Viral infection, medication use, and alcohol intake are among possible explanations for the elevation of SGPT. Your doctor will likely want to follow the test to see if it returns to normal, and may want to order other tests to check for exposure to viruses that cause hepatitis.

Change diet: How much do you weigh? Losing weight will help if your bmi is above 25. Stop drinking alcohol entirely. Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco.

Give it time: Liver tests are non-specific: sgpt, sgot, alk phos, bili. None of them (except ggtp for alcohol) is specific, so we have to follow general guidelines.  We start to worry if your test is 2x normal; more worry if 3x nl; and on and on.  Most of the time, liver tests normalize if no diagnosis is found (hepatitis, trauma, ). Eat a prudent diet, avoid tylenol, (acetaminophen) and retest in 3 months.
