Call your doctor: If you just had surgery yesterday and are in a lot of pain, you need to call your surgeon. There could be many different reasons for your pain, some of which are serious. It may be normal post-operative pain, but it could also signify a complication like a bowel perforation, internal bleeding, ureteral injury, or something else. Please call your surgeon.

Not common: To my knowledge, and i'm not a gyn surgeon, gassiness is not common after a hysterectomy. I would look for any changes in your diet that might have occurred at the same time, or an increase in gum chewing which can in turn lead to more air swallowing.

Walking: NSAID like motrin as well as walking is usually helpful at relieving gas pain after laparoscopic surgery.  Hope this helps.

Varies: At the time of a hysterectomy the intestines typically stop moving for some hours, but the gas inside the intestines keep accumulating.  Gas pains occur as the gas distends the intestines and the intestines start trying to push gas through.  Some women get hardly any pain from this, others find the gas is worse than incision pain.  Lessen gas pain by walking, simethicone, less narcotics.

Carbon dioxide: During a hysterectomy your abdomen is filled with co2 gas to provide an open space to perform the surgery.  Various gases are also used as anesthetics also.

Movement: the main obstacles to your intestines moving normally are the pain medications you are taking and immobility. Getting out of bed and walking is helpful and minimizing the amount of pain medication you take will help you get your intestines back on line.

Up to about 7 days.: It takes about 7 days and there's nothing really that can help to speed it up although some of my patient claim that walking and being active helps.

Time : Your body may need time to adjust to the surgey.  Or it may be the medication you are taking after surgery causing your symptoms. See your doctor.

Walking, limit drugs: Particularly if you had an abdominal hysterectomy, your GI tract could be in a " state of shock"  which shuts down normal peristalsis.  This is called an ileus.  Without peristalsis, intestinal contents ferment, producing gas which can't move down and out.  Percocet also slows peristalsis down.  Regularly walking around and limiting use of Percocet will help with the gas.  "This too shall pass."

Walking: Gas, bloating and constipation are very common after surgery. We encourage moving around and walking. This helps stimulate the intestines to start moving again after being put to sleep with anesthesia. You should be able to pass gas still. If you are not able to pass gas then prompt evaluation by your surgeon is warranted.
