IF you have no: symptoms , no need remove , they are in tendon sheaths , biggest sesamoid bone is patella.  If it is giving pain , unable to  walk  or wear shoes then only need its removal. If you do not have any symptoms , then no indication to remove , and no harm in waiting

Surgeon can explain: The surgeon can explain what happens after the surgery. The patient will likely have crutches so he an avoid putting weight on the affected foot for a few days until the surgeon has had a chance to check the foot, and decide if it is ok to start weight-bearing again.

what can i expect when going to have a sesamoid bone removal surgery?

No weight for 2-4 wk: A sesamoid bone is usually removed for a fracture that doesnot heal, avascular necrosis (dead bone) or severe arthritis. There are 2 so  one out is ok.The incision may be on the side or bottom of the foot so it is uncomfortable for about 2-4 weeks. An orthotic may be required post operatively to make up for the loss of the bone and physical therapy to regain motion and function.

It is safe to say that you can almost guarantee post-operative issues, if the sesamoid bones are removed. Of course, depending on your pre-operative symptoms, this may be an equitable exchange. These potential problems should be discussed in detail with your surgeon before your consent.

Should be healed: Maybe something else is going on?  Ct scan can be used to see if seasmoid is healed.

1 day post op from double bunion and sesamoid dislocation surgery, and my foot is elevated and still have circulation issues. is that normal? edema?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Bunion surgery involves cutting bone which inevitably leads to post- operative swelling and pain. Keep your feet elevated above your heart as much as u can. Usually the " circulation" to your feet is intact but the swelling (edema) may cause some numbness to your toes as it 'presses' in the nerve(s). Normal. If it worsens contact your surgeon. i previously had surgery to remove a fractured lateral sesamoid bone on my right foot 4 years ago. i still have pain, and my doctor after conservative methods and mri suggest removing the remaining sesamoid. are complications for that surgery risky?

: Removing bones have consequences.  Without knowing the cause of your on going pain is very dangerous. I recommend other opinions to help determine the cause of your pain. Removing the sesamoid bone has created an abnormal pull on the hallux. Big toe.  I would wait until cause is known
