i took zoloft (sertraline) for 15years it stopped working i take 20mgescitalopram for 6 months still having anxiety would it be safe to go back to zoloft (sertraline)?

Please discuss: this choice with your physician/ psychiatrist. Don't know what your previous dose of zoloft was. Sometimes increasing the dose will do the trick when it doesn't seem as effective over time.  Likewise- don't know your dose for lexapro (escitalopram) - raising that dose may be an option as well. Going back to zoloft may be an option for you. Take care.

There may well be: Finding that your ssri stops working after a period of time is not unusual.  You can see a psychiatrist to assess your continued need for these medicines, and select another that may help you more.  Also, you could add psychotherapy to your treatment. It can be a very important part of getting well.  Your family doctor may have good referral sources, and www.Psychologytoday.Com does also.

Please repost: Please state how long “a long time” is. Also, please state whether you can buy sertraline over the counter in the UK. If, like here in the States, you can obtain sertraline only by prescription, then please post the answer to your question given to you by the prescriber of the drug; or, if you have not asked the prescriber, please state why not.

Psychiatrist: This question is best answered by a psychiatrist as he/she has the greatest experience with these antidepressants and their uses, side effects and interactions. Substitution one for another can be tricky without that knowledge and experience.

Zoloft (sertraline) & Seroquel: Seroquel is an antipsychotic medicine that may be used to help antidepressants like zoloft (sertraline) to work better.  Drowsiness can be a side effect, but this may dissipate. Hoping it is effective for you, and you'll feel better soon.

Typically, 3-6 weeks: Zoloft (generic name sertraline) is an antidepressant/antianxiety medication in the family known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ssri's). Like most of these medications, the effects are not seen immediately. For most patients, these medications take 3-4 weeks to start to work.

Up to six weeks: First of all, there should be no real difference between generic sertraline and brand name zoloft. Also, it depends on what it being prescribed for and the dose you are taking. Sertraline is 50% better absorbed with food and i always tell my patients to take it every morning after breakfast. For major depression, 75% will respond in the first four weeks whereas 25% respond in 4-6 weeks.

Hopefully: Once you have an adequate blood level, if it is an appropriate medication for you, than it is likely you will see improvements in your psychiatric condition.  It won't be effective immediately, and you will need to be titrated up to the best dose for you.  There are never 100% guarantees. Good lucks.

Talk to doctor: At the 4 month point it is reasonable to think that you should have had some reduction in symptoms if this medicine was going to be effective for you.  If this is not the case, then consider discussing with your doctor in order to help determine your best course of action.
