Something else: i'm not wild about using it just for sleep, however, it is likely that your physician is using it to augment your antidepressant AND help you sleep. the effective dose range for augmentation can be fairly wide. there is no accepted number/dose for "sleep."

is it difficult to sleep if i come off of my seroquel (quetiapine). i've been on it for sleep for several yrs.

Probably: This might sound like a cop-out, but the answer really depends on what dose you've been taking (and other Rx's you're prescribed). At low doses (25-50 mg.), Seroquel (quetiapine) potently binds to histamine, but at normal doses, this effect diminishes.  Second, the brain tends to "up regulate" the H2 receptors (ie, you need more to get same effect). I generally taper off over 1 month period for my pts. G'luck!

i started taking seroquel (quetiapine) 50mg for sleep 11.14.14. it doesn't seem to be working. does it take time to build up in my system before it works?

Possibly: Sedation is a side effect of seroquel because it is a very powerful antihistamine like Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Though it is often used for anxiety and insomnia in doses up to 100 mg, there are many alternatives without risk of weight gain and other side effects. Above 100 mg it has more effect on serotonin and dopamine to help bipolar depression and schizophrenia

Ask your doc: Ask your doc about lowering the dose or trying a different med. Or ideally getting off sleeping pills all together (there's ways).

Yes: The use of Seroquel (quetiapine) for sleep is strictly 'off-label'. This is a side effect many like to use to their benefit for insomnia.  This side effect dissipates in time for most people.  If it is losing its 'ummph' I would advise seeing your doctor for a more appropriate sleeping treatment.

Important to ask Doc: It is important that you ask your physician directly about your medication prescribed and whether any changes in your meds can decrease your appetite.

: Don't try to medicate yourself without consulting with your PCP. Self medication can result in dangerous side effects.

Alcohol Interaction: Yes there is an interaction between alcohol and the seroquel.  The potential for neurological effects are greater with the interaction.  Therefore it is best to avoid alcohol when taking the medication.  If you have already had alcohol then do not take until the next day.

Yes: Both these medications can help someone fall sleep. Check with your psychiatrist Or your family doctor for specific diagnosis and treatment
