What's it doing?? : If it ruptured and is now healing, there should be no need. If it persistently drains, closes and reaccumulates, or is causing pain or looks red &amp; feels hot--then yes for any of those.

: An uncomplicated pilonidal cyst, even if left untreated is not likely to result in sepsis, unless you have other intercurrent issues or have immune deficiency.

can you get sepsis from a  infected bartholin cyst?

Sepsis ?: True sepsis is an unusual complication of an "infected Bartholin's cyst".  Generally speaking, the cyst is isolated and causes pain which results in drainage of the cyst and/or a surgical procedure to remove the cyst.  The diagnosis of sepsis would include a drop in blood pressure, rapid breathing and heart rate, elevated white blood cells and elevated lactic acid and temperature. Rare for this.

i just attempted to pop a cyst in my armpit, and i felt/heard it pop backwards. am i in any immediate danger? is there a risk of sepsis?

No sepsis risk: If you already know of congenital heart disease or Osler-Weber-Rendu or a few others with a right-to-left shunt, this can be dangerous as a cause of brain abscess. Otherwise, relax. Your lung will dispose of the pus from the pimple.

Yes: Yes if you had a massive tubo-ovarian abscess, depending on how it was treated, it could cause ongoing issues with ovarian cyst formation. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

: Sepsis is an uncommon process generally found in hospitalized patients with impaired immune function. If the cyst becomes infected its extent would most often be localized to that area, not spread to the bloodstream. If you are concerned about worrisome changes, contact your doc.

Complications: Much lower risk of complications from appropriate treatment than from letting infection go untreated. Hope your mom's recovery is uneventful.

Very rare: It happens, but it is rare enough that it usually gets reported in the medical literature when it does.  Splenic rupture with mononucleosis  is more common.

Good with treatment: Believe it or not, we have data from World War 2 concentration camps where there were plenty of doctor prisoners but no treatment available.  They found that the mortality rate of untreated appendicitis was only ~5%.  With treatment, mortality will be lower, although the course may be pronged prior to getting well.

Bad pain: If they contain intestines the tight restriction (incarceration) of a hernia can cut off blood supply leading the intestines to die , leaking germs (rupture) like e.coli &amp; yeast into the tissues. These germs will eventually reach the bloodstream &amp; kill the person. Surgery &amp; recovery are shorter &amp; safer before a rupture. Some hernias are more prone to rupture than others. Waiting can be deadly
