is extended use of sennakot all right if i take it every other day, rather than every day?

Accepted Answer

: Laxative should be used as needed, not routinely taking daily or every other day. What you are supposed to do routinely are good hydration, eat foods with high fiber or take fiber supplement and keep yourself active, preferably with daily exercise.

can i take sennakot i have diverticulitis?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but may not gel: Diverticulitis indicates an infection.  Usually requires antibiotics.  Senokot, (senna) may help reduce the effects of diverticulosis, this is an uninfected condition.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Its ok for a one-time thing.  Don't make it a habit though.

Constipation: Other over the counter medicines for constipation include miralax, (polyethylene glycol) which is a laxative.  When someone's been constipated for weeks, especially if associated with new abdominal pain, then i usually tell my patients to come in and get examined.  Concern is for fecal impaction or other process going on.

By emptying: you must mean having a sense of COMPLETELY emptying your bowels. You couldn't go for months with no bowel movement at all. It seems to me that repeated enemas are the way to go now..you could have at least a partial impaction and this would be the best way to deal with it. You should ask for some medical assistance so that you can be checked and monitored during this procedure. Work with your Doc.

can't bm for 8 weeks w/o suppository. doc says polyp wasn't the cause. tried fibre, water, lactulose, restorolax, sennokot..what else might be the cause?

Next steps: Have you had your blood counts (cbc), thyroid (TSH) and calcium levels checked? I recommend this lab work be checked to rule out a metabolic cause. If normal, the next step would be a painless procedure called an "anorectal manometry test with balloon expulsion", which tests for a condition called dyssynergic defecation. Your GI may recommend pelvic floor physical therapy.

Ok to take them: She can take sennakot three times daily along with the miralax (polyethylene glycol).

Chronic constipation: Most often, surgery is only considered as a last resort. For some people, having a bowel movement 2 to 3 times per week is normal. If you are able to achieve this using milk of magnesia, then I would not consider surgery at this time. It is always possible to have complications of surgery, and in  your situation, it doesn't sound absolutely necessary. Fiber and hydration are key. Good luck.

very good afternoon doctors! i had some constipation, and very stupidly played "musical doctors," and went to two gastroenterologists. one told me to take senekot or dulcolax, and one told me to take colace. what is your recommendation/preference?

No other disease?: Each person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then things people try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber-with-water, Miralax, Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, etc...  A doctor can evaluate and prescribe helpful meds too, such as Linzess or Amitiza.
