i'm ab+. i would like to donate plasma. i'm on anti seizure drugs and don't like the idea of spending hours with a bunch of drug addicts. should i?

You can't donate: at most centers because of your diagnosis (the procedure they use to obtain plasma will remove your seizure meds). Most plasma donation centers will not let you donate after they take you back for your initial examination and complete the review your medical history and medications.  Furthermore, you will spend about one to two hours at the plasma center before they get around to rejecting you.

can taking gabapentin long time cause seizures tendency in person who never had one?? i have been prescribed gabapentin for idiopathic rls but i figured that it's an anti seizures drug so is it harmful to me in that sense if i take it for years??

Accepted Answer

: Typically, if the medicine is taken as prescribed, it would not induce seizures in someone who is not prone to seizures. But, if you take the gabapentin for years and wish to stop taking it, the medication should be weaned off under a doctor’s care, not stopped abruptly. Stopping the med abruptly can induce seizures in some patients, usually those who are seizure-prone but better to be safe!

hi.. i am taking tegratol cr300 mg daily and my ggtp levels have increased  to 130 and they should be lesser than 38 . i cannot stop the drug as the seizures reoccur on stopping the drug , and no other seizure drug has suited me till now. can u suggest me

Continue: If you have no side effects continue the medicine  The levels are a guide and occasionally patients are controlloedwith higher and lower levels  If you have no dizziness or balance problem continue and periodically check the liver function and electrolytes

does long term use of anti-seizure drug such as neurontin changes brain chemistry permanently in some way or another?? i have been on neurontin 100 mg for nerve pain and mild restless legs. i am worried about long term use effect on brain, is it safe?

: There is NO evidence that Neurontin or any other anti-epileptic drug has potential to permanently change "brain chemistry", but does modify neurotransmitter function while being used.  100 mg is extremely low dose, and may have suboptimal benefits to treat your conditions.

what anesthetic drugs percipitate seizures.?

Very Few..: Very few actually precipitate (cause) seizures, although many anesthetic drugs and drugs administered in the "peri-operative . Period" do lower the seizure threshold. This might "increase" the possibility of a seizure if these drugs were given in unusually large amounts, which they rarely are...Narcotics, ketamine, anticholinergics, antihistamines, insulin, some antibiotics. No worry!

was recently given tramadol 50mg to take if i needed it. haven't taken any yet. i see one of the unique side effects is seizure. that may be rare but, what might cause a person to be more likely to have a seizure when taking this drug?

: Tramadol very rarely can promote seizure activity, and this appears to occur in those with history of epilepsy, and also taking relatively high doses, and rarely with sudden cessation after chronic high dose therapies.   If you take 2 or 3 per day, as needed, this would not necessarily be risky or dangerous

Unfortunately NO: You are aware of but one trigger, but there are many more potential stimuli.  Your meds are not needed when no provocative event is present, but that is rare, and on most days the potential for a seizure is far higher.  Your meds are there to keep you stable during the tough times, but hard to predict the future.  Follow your doctor's advice.  Good luck.

Grand Mal Seizure: Grand mal seizure if not prolonged i.e. Less than 60 seconds will not have any long term  sequelae. Status epilepticus (seizures that last greater than 5 minutes) are associated  with greater  morbidity, and by extension... Mortality.
