Yes and no: A true "sciatica" is the compression of a nerve or nerves that make up the sciatic nerve, associated with leg symptoms.  Because the sciatic nerve is in the low back and leg, a true sciatica can only be from there.  That being said, patients with cord compression in their neck can definitely have symptoms in their legs similar to a sciatica.  Consider being checked.

Weight loss: Please see your doctor or a nutritionist about the safest way to loose weight.  Ask the professional about the ketogenic diet--low carb and higher protein.  Lifestyle changes need to accompany this.  A personal trainer at a gym can provide the best exercise plan for your situation.  You can do it.

Sciatica: It is possible you may have developed a polyneuropathy- please have your physician consider ordering a nerve conduction study and emg, or you can request referral to a neurologist.

Yes and most of the : Time without surgery!   90% with sciatica due to a disc herniation get better without surgery independent of any specific treatment as time is the biggest healer.  Treatment also can include: medication, injections, activity modification, physical therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic. For those that have indicated surgery, the success is 90-95% as long as one is not a smoker or morbidly obese.

Sciatic pain: The sciatic pain can be caused by spinal stenosis, ruptured disc, nerve impingement ...  The treatment depends on the cause of the pain.  You should seek help from a health care provider,  you might benefit from a comprehensive evaluation.

Many possibilities: It could be caused by many different conditions: sacroiliac joint dysfunction, myofascial gluteal pain, disc disruption, 'sciatica' from a compressed nerve in your back, 'sciatica' from a compressed nerve in your buttock muscle (piriformis syndrome), referred pain from the hip, back, etc.  I'd suggest you see a physician to find the source.  Work up may include emg/ncs, x-rays, mri, or other tests.

i get sciatica every few months, this is the 1st time that it feels as if the symptoms are going upwards and not down my leg, is this common?

Accepted Answer

Sciatica: is a result of a compromised sicatic nerve in the leg.  If other pain move upward it involves another nerve which is certainly possible.
