May require NSAIDS : or prednisone ( a cortisone derivative ) , or use of high dose NSAIDS ( ibuprofen-600-800 mg) or  naproxen sodium ( Aleve)- 200- 500mg .
It is often necessary to provide low dose narcotic medication.

Exercise Bike: Since you can't change the weather where you live and biking outdoors is not an option due to your back being in shambles, what about biking indoors? An exercise bike takes up very little space and will allow you to continue your biking during the cold winter months.

Sequence it : If acute, use cold to decrease inflammation and swelling.  If after 48 hrs, heat will relieve the problems and loosen the muscle tightness in response to the nerve inflammation.  However, this is merely transient symptom relief and does not last.  Many meds available to improve discomfort level.  Physical therapy, and/or exercise may help from the get-go.  Some articles praise osteopathic omt.

Foot Pain is: Likely related to sciatic nerve. Need to see spine specialist or neurologist.  Doubt cold water will help long term.
