Scar tissue: Not so odd. If the surgery was on the side of the pinky then it is not unusual. Excision of scar does not always improve things as you develop even more scar. The best is to do both active and passive exercises and hope this improves things. Also what is the time frame from the surgery?

1 Option: Please discuss the possibility of acupuncture with your surgeon. It can accelerate healing & be very helpful with adhesive scars. This is one area where eastern & western medicine can dovetail well together.

: First, participate in hand therapy.  It may be that scar tissue is revised, but you need to discuss with the surgeon.  Best of outcomes.

It will mature: Scars mature over one year.  Everyone is different.  In most people scars will improve, but only time will tell.

See a hand surgeon: I would speak with a hand surgeon. If the fingers involved have already had surgery, I am not sure how effective the injections would be.

why do orthopedic surgeons not do 2nd surgeries on the hand/wrist?  they are telling me that it is not so simple going through the scar tissue.

Accepted Answer

Depends: AS the wrist and hands have multiple bones and joints, needing fine motor movements, one can imagine the hesitation to limit the number of surgeries to avoid unnecessary scar formation, which would interfere with those movements and needed flexibility. In the meantime, pl continue to employ OT/PT to maximize strength.

what is the best way to get rid of scare tissue after hand surgery ?

Accepted Answer

Avoid the Sun.: Avoid sun exposure, and use sunscreen if you are stepping outside.  Keep away from swimming-- especially in the ocean--until the scab has fallen away. Be vigilant for signs of infection (redness, increased pain, drainage, warmth).  Once scab has fallen away, a topical cream like Mederma has improved many of my own scars.

Normal process: Surgery is a trauma to the tissues. Inflammation results which is part of the healing process. Fibrous tissue  is the end result. Hence the scar, or adhesions if internal.

Accepted Answer

No: Scar tissue is permanent and surgery will replace scar tissue with other scar tissue. Surgery may replace unfavorable scarring with more favorably oriented or less scarring.

Accepted Answer

Internal or external: External: depends on if open (traditional survery) or laparoscopic( belly button surgery). More likely w/trad approach. Internal: probably will get adhesions (internal scars) w/either, more likely w/traditional approach.
