Accepted Answer

Maybe: Rinse with cool water or eye wash.  If you start to develop symptoms (blurred vision, redness, pain, ect.) see an ophthalmologist.

Extremely unlikely: i have not heard of one instance of this occurring in the literature. I would recommend flushing your eye though with clean water to minimize other bacterial or viral infections.

my indoor cat was shaking and some of her saliva got in my eye, i immediately washed my eye and even did put a drop of my lenses water to desinfect, is there any risk of infection or going blind?

: If you did all that then you cleared your eye of whatever went in it. If there is no redness or irritation then you should be fine.

hello..i recently got eye lasik surgery about 2 weeks ago. while at work an hiv + patients saliva fell in my left eye. will i be okay or will i be in danger due to recent surgery in my eyes.. ?!

HIV transmission: is very unlikely with saliva. If the eye surgery was a concern to you, your skin covering over the LASIK flaps has already healed. So, I dont see an issue for concern there. Follow the protocol at your place of work for coming in contact with bloodborne pathogens and get tested as deemed appropriate. I don't think there is a case report of HIV transmission through saliva. Good luck.

hi! i work in a hospital. im currently 34 weeks pregnant. during my shift a hiv infected patient saliva got in my eye while talking. i immediately used eye wash station and rinsed out eye. patient is noncompliant with meds. what are chances of hiv?

: Extremely low risk, with no reported cases having occurred from eye contamination with body fluids. In addition, saliva is low risk; kissing and oral sex rarely transmit HIV. Still, nobody can say the risk is zero. Immediately discuss this event with the infection control team at your hospital; they will advise next steps. Good luck.

Possibly: Mrsa is just a type of resistant staph bacteria. Like most infections, it is potentially transmisable but most likely you have nothing to worry.  Just wash your hands and keep your infected area clean and covered.

Doubt it: But do not know of any data which would support my opinion.  Saliva is toxic to many bacteria and they do not survive well in it.  Pink eye can be due to both bacterial and viral infections and is usually transmitted by people touching their eyes and then hand to hand to eye transfer.  Wonder why you are asking - i guess people still spit on each other.

Very Unlikely: Rabies is relatively uncommon even in raccoons.  Rabies can't go through unbroken skin. People can get rabies only via a bite from a rabid animal or possibly through saliva infected scratches, abrasions, open wounds. The rabies virus is short-lived when exposed to open air. Given these facts, there is almost no chance that the raccoon you hit was rabid, and that the saliva could have infected you.

Yes: A herpetic lesion had an infectious stage when lesions are present. Most commonly, a herpetic lesion in the eye is transferred by touching the eye. But it is possible to transfer it via saliva.  As a health care provider, we wear eye protection because an eye splash is just as dangerous as a needle stick.
