i have a dermatofibroma on my right cheek. i picked it two months ago, thinking it was a pimple, grew inflamed, took a month to flatten out. i used azelaic acid on it. the scar remained. it has now returned. what can i do about the red raised bump?

Only a little: Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive procedure that you can get at a salon. It is really more like a deep facial. Dermabrasion is a surgical technique that can more effectively treat your raised scar. Laser resurfacing with a co2 laser or erbium laser can also work well.

Probably not: If after two years there has been no problem other than a raised scar - you probably have no infection, but a dermatologist might help you feel certain and even might be able to remove it. Best!

Possibly: Scarring is always a risk with laser tattoo removal.  A raised scar indicates a type of scarring called hypertrophic scarring and may require treatment with topical or injectable steroids to improve the appearance and flatten the raised area of the scar.

Silicone Gel / Sheet: Silicone gel with gentle massage to the area twice daily might help. If it is extremely raised, you might want to see a plastic surgeon to evaluate for possible steroid injection into the lesion.

Keloid?: Some people have a genetic predisposition to large, raised scars called keloids. There is not really any great solution for them. Some doctors try injecting them with steroids or using a laser or scalpel to remove them (and hope it doesn't come back). Moisturizing lotions, oils, vitamin E, etc, might be of some help.
