Time!: Sore muscles, especially those from a hard workout or a new strenuous activity, simply recover on their own. Soreness should    resolve within 3-4 days. Hydrating well,  applying ice and/or heat for 20 minutes 2-3x/day and resting the muscles until the soreness has significantly reduced should suffice for most. Nsaids like advil or Aleve (naproxen) can be used for a few days to alleviate the soreness.

Depends on cause: There are many reasons one's muscle or muscles can become sore. For example, a person can be overusing her muscles, or can be out of shape due to underusing them and then hurting after doing "normal" levels of activity. Sometimes a person can have medication effects that cause muscle symptoms. Also common are flu-like illnesses in which viruses hurt the muscles. Details matter.

HEAT IS GOOD FOR: Stiff, tight muscles. Ice is good for pain and inflammation, as a general rule of thumb.
Joints respond differently though.

Yes: If your muscle(s)are " sore" after exercise or an activity that u haven't done in a while, rest, ice etc is appropriate .Stretching would aggravate the muscle that is irritated acutely. However, if u continue to exercise and notice that a certain muscle group ( hamstrings, for example) continues to be " sore"; than stretching before( and after) u exercise can be very helpful.
