If given the option: The method of hernia repair is often dependent on a surgeon's experience & training as well as what (s)he believes might be the best option for you. However, if your surgeon offers you both options, of course you may choose what you believe is the best option.

Yes: If the mesh was placed close to the bladder, it certainly can cause discomfort w/urination. I see this most commonly following (laparoscopic) inguinal hernia repair, but, if the hernia was near the pelvis, it is possible.

Likely: There is usually some resolving hematoma and fluid around the surgical site and the mesh.

SurgeryOnlyOption: Umbilical hernias may be easily repaired under general anesthesia as an out-patient. Depending on the size of the hernia and other patient-factors, we often advise using mesh to close the hole (like patching a tire).  I  advise hernia repair if it is causing symptoms that are interfering with one's quality of life, or if the hole is so large that there is the potential for intestine to get stuck.

i had my hernia repaired on feb.4 everything looks fine but my left side looks indented if i move in a certain position it is extremely painful.why?

Suture: If this is near the hernia repair site, it could be due to a suture tethering connective tissue under the skin. It should go back to a normal contour within 6 months. If it doesn't, and it is bothersome, your surgeon can fix it. You should see your surgeon to be sure. Glad you're doing we'll overall.

Yes: Lose weight if you are overweight. If you smoke, cut-down or better yet, quit. If you are a diabetic, make sure it is well-controlled. Ask your doctor about stopping blood thinners if you are taking any.

Several: Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs are usually not risky operations. Hernia recurrence rates vary between 2-10%. There is always a risk of ongoing pain, testicular swelling, bleeding, mesh infection. Generally, it is associated with a shorter recovery, but not any other advantage.

Perhaps: The two most common reasons for needing a second surgery after hernia repair is hernia recurrence or removal of infected mesh.  If you are experiencing healing problems after hernia surgery, it is critical to return to see your hernia surgeon.

Possibly: It depends on the location of the hernia.  If it is at your navel area, that has a greater 
possibility than if it was in the groin.

it's been 16 day since my hernia repair. it's starting to feel itchy now. is this part of the healing process?

Accepted Answer

Hernia : Especially if this was an open repair (non-laparoscopic), the wound can itch and this is normal.  Just make sure that you are not dealing with a wound infection.  Excessive redness, heat or pain/drainage would be indicative of that.
