Yes: Thoracentesis, as it is known, involves placing a needle into "pleural space" under local anesthesia and with drawing fluid by a syringe or allowing passive drainage.  Certain 'rapidly accumulating" effusions may require hospitalization and placement of a chest tube.

: Tough to assess "safeness" without seeing you friend.  "Medicine is not easy" I was once told early in my career.  Now you can see why. I would request a meeting with the Dr. in charge.  There are pros and cons for both approaches. Discuss with them and patient if you are part of his care folks.

Yes: Generally only procedure to prevent fluid from coming back. Does your mom have cancer.

Relatively safe: Intractable a. Fib are treated with cardioversion. It is relatively safe. They usually give a sedative to make them comfortable.

Mgt: Open the clip, unwind the suture, cut the suture and gently remove, as indicated.

Not really.: There is no 'procedure' to clean your lungs.  The very best thing that you can do for your lungs is to stop smoking. This will also save you money as smoking is expensive!
if you have concerns about 'cleaning' your lungs and about smoking cessation, go to a local clinic and discuss your concerns with a provider / doc.  Medications, hypnosis, and behavior modification may help.  Be well!

Yes: Two years of smoking will do very little measurable damage to the lung in most individuals, but lung function tests can detect tobacco induced damage if it is present. More importantly if you quit now, you can avoid a lifelong accumulation df damage that can lead to lung cancer and or emphysema.

Evaluation: Serious fall with pulmonary contusion and/or injury needs proper trauma evaluation. Depending on the findings, the individual may require a chest tube. The key to pulmonary injury care/treatment is pulmonary hygiene and appropriate analgesia with procedural interventions as needed to facilitate max lung re-expansion.

what is the normal procedure in a lung biopsy?

Procedure specific: There are 3 different ways to do a lung biopsy. Ct guided uses a needle inserted thru the chest while taking ct scan images. Bronchoscopic involves running a flexible tube into the windpipe. Surgical biopsy involves cuts in the chest, either using a rigid tube (vats), or larger incision for an open biopsy.
