is there a difference between a muscle strain and sprain? what is the treatment for both? i injured my thigh muscle working out.

Difference: A sprain is a stretch and/or tear of a ligament.  A strain is an injury to a muscle and/or tendons.  Rest, ice, compression and elevation are used to address both types of injuries(for the most part.) But the nuance of treatment really depends on the exact nature of your injury.

Back strain: Oral anti-inflammatory, oral muscle relaxer, rest, alternating ice/heat.

Accepted Answer

Stretch, heat, meds: Alternate applying moist heat and ice to your back, otc topical anti-inflammatory creams, otc Motrin and/or tylenol (acetaminophen) and stretching exercises. If you back pain persists despite trying any one or all of these, you should see your md/do. If you have fevers, chills, weight loss, bowel or bladder incontinence, leg weakness, numbness or tingling, or if you are over 55 or have fallen lately, see your md.

Maybe: Several possibilities: pleurisy, lung injury, punctured intestine, heart, etc.  

A very common cause for pain in this location , however, though not serious, is extremely painful: a dysfunctional rib. Pain is often front & back. Md's almost never make this diagnosis, but osteopathic docs who do hands-on diagnosis & treatment, in addition to doing all the other work-up, often find & treat this.

Slow rehab: It can take 3-8 weeks to work kinks out of a back sprain... Strecth use inversion table use nsaids and mild increasing exercise..

Bump: If rest was all you tried and it has not resolved then you should now see your doctor and he may perhaps send you to pt/massage. A trigger injection may be of benefit depending on what it is.

See below: In general no bed rest unless pain is really severe.  It is best to lay on whatever is most comfortable.  Get up and do as much as you can.  General rule of thumb is that if it hurts a little it is ok, but do not go to extremes and use good body mechanics.  Try to keep one foot on a stool or rest. Do not stay in one position too long. If it really hurts don't do it. Time cures this.

if you have tension headaches emanating from neck/back muscle strain, what is the best way to sit and hold your posture so as not to aggravate it more? straight up? or should i have support?

: Fine to try having good posture, but real concern might involve neck problems, such as cervical spondylosis or degenerative disc disease.  Discuss with your doctor as simple imaging may reveal cause, and perhaps physical  therapy can stabilize your symptoms.

: Your question is not clear. For the long term, you should engage in regular aerobic exercise to improve the strength and flexibility of your muscles. Exercise about 30 minutes/day 5 days a week. Gradually increase the intensity of exercise, as tolerated, drink enough water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs.

Spine evaluation: If it has not resolved and/or does not respond to self-applied muscle treatments like heat, rest, topicals, then it should be evaluated to rule out an underlying structural issue in the spine.
