Hip pain: Try ice 2-3 times a day and ibuprofen like medications. It it doesn't resolve see your doctor.

Bursa/joint/nerve?: The location suggests bursitis, irritation over the bony bump on the upper femur. Age and activities might favor other diagnoses such as: hip arthritis, sacroiliac arthritis, nerve pinched in back. Local application of heat along with cautious use of an anti-inflammatory medication like Aleve (naproxen) or advil may help. Increased pain, trouble walking warrant a doctor visit.

Exam: Sometimes it's hard. Sij pain is in the buttock and lumbar strain in the back muscles above the buttocks. Initial treatment is the same.

Many possibilities: Let your wife see an internist and be tested for osteoarthritis, rrheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune conditions e.G lupus. 
Blood tests are  in order to check for kidney, liver and heart problems.
Xrays would help for diagnosis.

Get it evaluated: Hip area back can be due to arthritis of the hip, bursitis, tendinitis or be a referred pain from the lower back. Get it evaluated and then you will know what treatment will work best.

problem with my hip joint, theres pain when i open my hips wide enough and i have restricted movement. i always had bad pelvis posture but i have been addressing it recently. i can hear pops and cracks doing leg lifts and other exercises?

Hip problems :  I will not be able to address your issues unless I see you in person. But my experience is that people who overdo  exercise can develop tears in the labrum of the hip joints leading to hip poping

Needs evaluation: Even the name "hip" pain is not specific. See physician to identify exactly where the pain is located.  There is often specific treatment.

Bursitis arthritis: With increased activity, the outer side of the hip area can become sore and ache. This is commonly known as trochanteric bursitis of the hip.  If its the groin that hurts, this can be a hip arthritis. However, there are many causes of pain so i would get checked for proper diagnosis.

If the pain is: Tolerable and not getting worse, it should be ok. Take nsaids/motrin for pain. Take care!
