Diet and fluids: I rarely prescribe meds for ibs. In my experience teaching people to eat and drink properly resolves most if not all symptoms when the patient is compliant and follows through. Hi fiber, 80-100 ounces non caffeine, non alcoholic beverages each day, regular meal times, excercise. Consistency is the key to being symptom free.

i have an acute angulated tortuous colon after colonoscopy. is this serious?

: This is entirely normal. The only reason for comment is that it makes colonoscopy a somewhat more difficult procedure.

Accepted Answer

May be: Depends.....it should be better by now. Some may need time. Some times improper instrument cleaning can introduce/cause infection. If bx/resection ofpolyp is done it may contribute.

Maybe.Give GI a call: Gastroenterologists do describe "colonic redundancy" &amp;/or "tortuosity" as a colonic anatomic variant  that makes performing colonoscopy technically more challenging. In such cases, there may be considerable looping &amp; coiling by the colon, that may not translate into colon dysfunction. Such variation can be seen in laxative users, when significant fibrosis/adhesions distort colon, some body types.

Speak with GI: "tortuous colon" is not a disease. It is a description of your anatomy. 

If you have a distended abdomen and pain, it may be completely unrelated. You should speak with your gastroenterologist about this.

how often is a colonoscopy aborted because of a tortuous sigmoid colon fixed in position, and why? (both adult & pediatric colonoscope could not be advanced past the sigmoid colon despite being put in the supine position w/ multiple diverticula seen?

Infrequent: This is not rare, and the procedure can be accomplished via use of virtual "colonoscopy" employing CAT scanning.  However, pre-procedure preparation is the same.  A gastroenterologist can fully explain the various approaches, answer your questions, and treat necessary complications.

i am having difficulty with bowel movements.and a lot of gas.i was told i had a tortuous colon 13
years ago. seems like i am having more problems now.

Constipation: You need to add fiber in form of fresh vegetables in your diet, drink a lot of water, avoid meat and white flour, take Metamucil or miralax to cleanse bowel, avoid gas producing food, like left overs, poorly cooked beans and meats. Will have to continue on daily basis. Can try GAS X , and or OTC laxatives like Dulcolax if still not better.

Diet  important: Bloating occurs in nearly all patients with irritable bowel syndrome, and it also occurs in patients with  functional and organic disorders. Effective treatments are limited and are not universally successful. GI generally follow a stepwise approach, formulating the treatment plan with the patient in order to improve compliance. Symptoms, although uncomfortable and frustrating, but usually benign.

Constipation: Extra long colon can serve to obsorb more water but also slow down fecal transist time leading to potential constipation.

Accepted Answer

A fair amount: The percentage it is not known, since this finding is subjective, and depending how difficult the colonoscopy was. Percentage is probably around 5% of colonoscopies.
