Ice and steroids: You could take Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) apply an ice pack, and use done steroid cream carefully as long as it is not too close to the sclera.  Otherwise, a steroid dosepack if indicated.

Great question: Crushed Aspirin paste is used as a remedy for many things like wart removal.  Unless there is an allergy to aspirin, it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.  It is an anti inflammatory.

my daughter is having a reaction to a bug bite and is swelling. all i have is claritin, (loratadine) will this work to reduce swelling etc? or should i buy benedry

Mgt: I would recommend Claritin (loratadine) , topical caladryl and ice. If the reaction involves other symptoms such as respiratory distress please see the ED.

Insect bite: Try applying ice directly onto the bite for 10-15 minutes.  This will relieve the discomfort and may reduce the inflammation.

Probably any insect: bite can cause swelling or fever depending on your body's response and/or the potential development of associated cellulitis/infection.

Variable: As long as the swelling does not represent an abscess, the redness should resolve within 7-10 days. Avoid scratching it. Keep it clean and apply a 1% hydrocortisone cream. If the area becomes painful or hot or is enlarging in size think of infection and see your doctor about an antibiotic or drainage.

See her PCP: This may be a simple arthus reaction to the bite but the kids PCP can confirm or exclude this before the weekend.The capillaries sometimes act like soaker hoses and lay down a lot of serum to dilute any debris injected in a bite. The process can be dramatic, and takes days to go away.

No particular bug: Bug bites are rarely unique to a specific insect.  Flea bites are small and have little clear vesicles and extreme itching but this is not unique to fleas either. This lesion could be a sting or a bite, it is impossible to say. Watch for signs of infection: pus, increasing pain, redness &amp; see doc if that happens. If numbness, tingling or severe pain,or fever, head to the ER. Tetanus shots current?
