It may also mean infection of the biliary tract, which can progress to ascending cholangitis, which is life threatening. Ascending cholangitis is often associated with obstruction of the bile ducts, most commonly from gall stones.

: Acute cholangitis is usually the result of an infection of bile within the bile ducts often due to blockage of the bile flow by a stone, or other cause such as cancer.  The infection itself is an emergency usually requiring drainage and antibiotics.  Since the biliary tree is within the liver, hepatitis can result as well.  Acute vs chronic hepatitis has to do mainly with length of time and cause.

Bacteria in the bile duct are readily absorbed into the bloodstream from the liver and lead to serious infections.  Classic findings are right upper abdominal pain (not unlike a gallbladder attack), fever, and jaundice.  Some people are so ill that they are lethargic and have no pain complaints.

Cholangitis can be fatal if left untreated.
