what are symptoms of rectal perforation? i've been bloated and have the urge to burp(let out gas) but i feel like i cant(although i manage sometimes).

Not perforation: Bloating is due to too much gas in stomach possibly related to diet or swallowing of large amts of air.  Rectal perforation infers there is trauma to the rectum causing damage to the wall with free drainage into the pelvis.  Otherwise trauma from manipulation with a colonoscope can cause peroration into the bladder in a male or vagina of a female or other loops of bowel.Surgery needed for repair.

can i take a rectal temp 20 min after giving  toddler a suppository if it didn't work? could that cause bowel perforation?

Accepted Answer

No: I assume your toddler took some suppository for fever.  It would not effect so quickly so i will give another 20 minutes before i take the temp/onset of action 30min to 4 hr/.  

It won&#x27;t cause any perforation if you use it properly.

Risk is minimal: Use some lubrication to insert the thermometer.

Quickly: The pain would arise immediately and would not improve.  The infectious issues related to the perforation would set in in just a few hours,  including fever, chills and signs of peritonitis with distention.  However, if you suspect this, immediate visit to the er is recommended.  I hope for the best and my thoughts are with you guys.

Anal Fissure: No. As you have already been told this is not of any concern. You have either or both an internal hemorrhoid that has ruptured or you have a small tear, known as an anal fissure.

Possible: It's possible while manipulating the colon that an instrument could have "knicked" the duodenum - the first part of the small intestine.  It wouldn't be the most common complication of a colectomy though.

It varies much: Many (perhaps most)  uterine perforations by an IUD appear to be "silent or asymptomatic" and are only detected when the IUD strings are no longer visible. The pains or other symptoms from an IUD which has entered the abdominal cavity may depend on the type of IUD, the location of the uterine perforation, the possibility of a co-infection, the position of the IUD in the abdomen...

Microperforation: Though uncommon, this is not a rare problem associated with a very common and important procedure. Pain within a few hours, sometimes with fever, is an indication. Free abdominal air on a plain film is adequate to make the diagnosis.  Usually, bowel rest and antibiotics will suffice, but occasionally surgical intervention will be necessary. Good luck.

Very unlikely: It is very unlikely that your gastroenterologist missed perforation and let you go home.  It is even less likely to have a perforation and not be severely ill 24 hours later.

Cleft palate: Hi! it is likely that your brother has a cleft palate. We have all seen babies or pictures of people with cleft lip, this is a developmental defect that is not uncommon. A cleft palate is similar but not as involved as a cleft lip defect. Your brother has likely had this since birth, and can be examined by an ear, nose and throat specialist for a diagnosis.
