i have been keeping my kids away from other kids because of covid while they are not in school yet & we are in 6th wave. just turn on our a/c. last 2 days, 1 year old has raspy voice. no other symptoms. what could it be?

: Possibly some postnasal drip leading to hoarseness. Watchful waiting is fine unless there is accompanying difficulty breathing, fever, lethargy, or inability to eat/drink

Not always: For some people a raspy voice is normal if it has been the same for years. New onset raspiness can be due to strain of vocal cords,viral infection,smoking, presence of vocal cord nodules or other growths. An otolaryngologist is best qualified to evaluate,advise and treat you.

Voice rest: If u have a profession that entails u to talk a lot then that can cause it n voice rest is best treatment. Chronic post nasal drip, acid reflux/ heart burn, nodule on vocal cord r other possibilities. I would suggest u to see ur doc.

Possibly: A raspy voice is the result of some disease of the larynx or inflammation of the vocal folds (cords).  Pharyngitis means an inflammation of the back of the throat.  Although they can occur together as a result of a viral infection, the two problems are usually unrelated.  Raspy voice can be due to voice abuse or a growth on the vocal folds.  Pharyngitis may be due to infection or reflux of acid.

Possibilities: A raspy voice at that age is usually either overuse (screaming/crying) or a mild transient viral infection of the voice box. Either will usually pass in time. If it persists more than 2 wks I would see her doc.

RSV?: An otherwise healthy infant should be able to weather an upper respiratory illness with only supportive care (watch for high fever, lethargy, struggling to breathe, poor oral intake, etc.). If any of the above are present, medical evaluation is necessary, and some babies require hospitalization and nebulized breathing treatments, e.g. For RSV infection (see cdc.Gov/rsv). Best wishes!

URI: Probably the beginning of an upper respiratory viral infection.  As long as the baby is feeding well, breathing without difficulty and doesn't have a fever then you can treat at home with nasal suction, humidifier, etc.  If the baby seems to have trouble breathing, becomes listless or has a fever, see your doctor or urgent care.

Yes: Gerd is well known to possibly responsible for a hoarse voice. Having said that, there are also many other causes of hoarseness. Getting the stress under control would probably go a long way to help the whole symptom complex. Best of luck.

Voice rest: Strict voice rest, no throat clearing, increase water intake, consider a nasal steroid spray, consider a temporary stomach acid pill, and a physician may give an oral or injectable steroid.  Good luck, hope it goes well.

If they find something unusual or concerning, they can follow up with imaging studies or a trip to the or for a flexible and/or rigid bronchoscopy for a definitive diagnosis.
