Ranula: A ranula is a mucus cyst in the mouth for which surgical excision is performed for removal. I'm unsure of the significance of determining the amylase content. Your otolaryngologist or oral surgeon is best qualified to evaluate,advise and treat you.

No!: No, there are a couple of possibilities.  Sometimes when a ranula or cyst is removed, an adjacent salivary gland duct is traumatized and obstructed by the surgery in the adjacent area.  In that case, it may not drain properly;  the gland produces saliva and you will form a new cyst in the location of the previous surgery.  It is unpredictable and hard to avoid, but is a possibility .

Recurrent ranula: Ranulas recur least when they are excised as opposed to being marsupialised. See an otolaryngologist to discuss your options, given this recurrence.

Can leave it: A ranula is a type of mucocele or mucous retention cyst in the floor of the mouth, if it becomes large it is uncomfortable. It is so named as it resembles a frog (latin for frog). If left alone it will likely spontaneously rupture, or if desired it can be excised or use a syringe to evacuate the liquid (by a doctor, not at home).

i hav to undergo an extraction of submandibular gland coz of ranula.is it a major surgery? will it hv post surgery complications.im very worried.

Post surgery care: It is understandable to be worried about post surgery problems. However, your procedure is routine and safe. Take a friend/family with you to each appointment, keep your post surgery appointments, call in with problems. Your surgeon and team want to work with you through recovery. Be well.

i dont know what is  happening. do i have ranula condition?

Possibly: It is next to impossible to diagnose problems such as these without an examination. You were treated less than a week ago, please go back to your treating dentist (or oral surgeon) for a post operative evaluation.

Start with your DDS: or speak to your family doctor  several spelialists remove oral lesions  oral surgeons , ENT and general surgeons.  It is minor low risk out patient procedure.

will keeping ice on mucocele make it go away?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: A mucocele results when the duct to the affected salivary gland is occluded and does not allow the saliva to empty into the mouth. Ice will probably not resolve the obstruction.
