ENT: The term you refer to is used moreso for xrays, which is not the imaging study of choice for the parotid lesions.

You should see your local ENT if possible to evaluate.  Most parotid "masses" are benign, but a fine needle aspiration would reveal more about a parotid lesion.

No: Colon polyps are mucosal tissue overgrowth which are not radio graphically sensitive. On the other hand, radioopaque lesions in salivary glands are soft tissue calcification which could be secondary to salivary duct calcification to chronic gland infection. Both are not related.

Not blighted ovum: A blighted ovum is when there is a gestational sac but no fetus at all. Since your sonogram shows a fetal pole it is not a blighted ovum. You will need to keep your follow up sonogram appointment which should be made for next week to see if the heartbeat is seen. An early miscarriage is still a possibility so follow up is needed.

More info needed: Where was the polyp removed from?  It it was removed in close proximity on the same side of the parotid gland then maybe.     The polyp may be unrelated to the parotid finding which may be a salivary stone that is easily treatable.    However more information is needed.   Thank you.

CT.: Iodine contrast highlights the vessels on ct (arteries/veins) so it is easier to detect lymph nodes or other tumors.  Barium highlights the stomach, small and large intestine.  This allows easier detection of abdominal tumors.  A ct without contrast is difficult to interpret.  Could consider MRI with gadolinium contrast (different than iodine) if need be.  Best discussed with your oncologist.

It depends: on the technical parameters of the scans, particularly the CT scan. The exposure from the CT scan could potentially be more, about the same, or lass than a PET scan.

Depends..: It depends on what type of nuclear study you are having done.  There are many different radiotracers and each has a different half life and different decay mode.  For ct scan,  it depends on how much of the body is scanned and what the settings on the scanner are.   Is it a ct of the chest?  Ct of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis?

is barium safe with ct scan?

Accepted Answer

Yes. However,: We use different concentrations of barium for ct as opposed to conventional fluroscopy. If you had an upper GI series, small bowel series or barium enema, that needs to pass through the GI tract before you can take the oral barium for ct which is much more dilute. Barium sulphate suspension is essentially inert, and completely safe to ingest.
