Depends on who u ask: I found a study done in Turkey in 2013 which found that patients treated with aripiprazole spent less time in their major depressive episode compared to those treated with quetiapine. Ref: ScienceDirect. Value in Health Regional Issues 2 (2013) 171-180.

No: The mechanism of action differs in all 3  (aripiprazole, quetiapine &amp; ziprasidone) ... However, the main therapeutic target for these is D2 (a type of Dopamine) so in that way they are all similar.  How each of the drugs influences the other neurotransmitter systems is where the differences arise. Hope that helps!

i want to know the difference of mechanisms in this drugs: aripiprazole 15 mg, and quetiapine 5 mg (1/2 of pill). i have a bipolar disorder.

Close but not cigar: Independently of their dosages, they are both atypical antipsychotics. They share similar properties as antipsychotics and mood stabilizers . What's different is their side effect profile, life time, tolerance, etc.. Seriquel is more edating and increases appetite. Abilify (aripiprazole) can be more activating, less weight gain .

Less weight gain: Forget the weight gain. You need to see your Psychologist and/or Psychiatrist to help control your bipolar disorder.

i was putting too much weight on with quetiapine so i changed to abilify (aripiprazole) to try and loose weight . but i am getting muscle spasms. is that normal ?

Abilify (aripiprazole): Please notify your physician. Akathisia is the sensation that your muscles need to keep moving ( and can make it hard not squirm). If this is occurring then bendadryl or Cogentin (benztropine) can help. Muscle spasm are rare but can occur. Doctors educate patient about neuroleptic malignant syndrome which can present with rigid muscles, confusion, fever, sweating & autonomic problems.

Bipolar: I think your "f" drug may be fanapt, or iloperidone.  And maybe you meant "risperidone." all of these antipsychotics may be used in acute mania or psychotic depression, along with other mood stabilizers.  But only asenapine, olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, ; ziprasidone have fda indication as monotherapy in acute mania or depression.  Maintenance: Risperidone consta (and Olanzapine in ca).

Yes but...: People tend to try to avoid combining medications in the same class, depending on what is being treated, the doses involved, and so on.  These medications together can increase the risk of irregular heartbeat, sometimes dangerously.  They can also be sedating, moreso together.  It also depends what they are being used for and how.  Ask your doctor.

Yes!: These are in the same class but they are NOT interchangeable! You cannot safely pick the dose and timing of either. Work closely w/ the prescribing doctor who is exploring fairly new terrain to find the best way to help you. Don't do it alone - it can be very risky!

is quetiapine 50mg tablets good for the elderly with dementia. i was prescribed that pill.  should i ask for abilify or another alternative?

Yes: Quietepine is a common medication for dementia in older patients, yes.  I would recommend trying/taking it as prescribed and following up with the treating physician in about one month - sooner with any new or worsening problems.  To my knowledge, ability is good for mood disorder and depression, but not for dementia alone.

just started titration to abilify (aripiprazole) from seroquel. the latter helps me sleep. can both meds be taken or is there a reason my psych suggested titration?

Same class of med: These two are the same class of meds, and the risk of side effects with metabolic problems goes up if you are on both. It is fine to take both for a very short time as you switch one to another, but to stay on both long term would not give you any additional benefit to outweigh the risk of being on both.
