That's very simple: Pain indicates a problem.  That's nature's way of telling us to see a doctor in order to diagnose the problem and treat it.  We can't diagnose problems such as these without actually examining you and seeing x-rays of the area in question.  The sooner you see a dentist, the sooner you will feel better.  It won't go away by itself.  In fact, it's likely to get worse very quickly!

Eliminate Cause: Whatever the reason for your jaw pain, proper diagnosis and treatment is important.  Otc advil (ibuprofen) or prescriptions can help aid in relief of pain, but removing cause of pain will ultimately eliminate the pain or minimize the jaw pain.

Have evaluated: The first step would be to see a dentist to find out what the cause is for the TMJ pain.  You may get some relief from taking ibuprophen and using a warm compress over the joint to relax the muscles.  Therapy usually consists of an occlusal appliance, possible physical therapy, or if extreme possibly surgery.

Jaw pain: No simple answer; it depends what's the cause. Jaw pain can be due to dental/periodontal disease, sinusitis, even earache (referred pain), it can be due to medication effects (eg. Fosamax), intrinsic bone disease (benign and malignant tumors), cysts, TMJ joint pain, or hyperostosis (overgrowth of bone). You need an evaluation.
