i have a pulmonary nodule that was 5 mm in 07/2013.  as of 09/2014 it is 6 mm.
would you recommend a follow up next year?
i haven't smoked in 30 years

Work-up now: The nature of the nodule needs to be established now rather than waiting for a year. You may wish to discuss with your doctor other diagnostic modalities, e.g., Pet scan and consultation with a pulmonary specialist.

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily: Central calcification, laminated or stippled calcification (popcorn) calcified nodules are benign.  However, calcifications on the edge or periphery of a nodule could still be malignant and need further evaluation with followup ct scan, pet scan and/or biopsy.

what is a noncalcified pulmonary nodule? is it treatable?

Accepted Answer

It is a small: lung mass.  There are benign and potentially malignant causes.  Whether it needs workup  depends on its imaging features and your clinical history.  Sometimes a biopsy is necessary to determine what it is, other times it can be safely followed or ignored.  The presence of calcification is important because most of the time a calcified nodule is benign.

: All imaging results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, the results are consistent with healed granulomas. If you have not had any symptoms since 2013, you may ignore it.    Wish you good health!

Multiple causes: Non calcified nodules can be caused by infection, inflammation or possibly cancer. Depending on the size of the nodule and your personal history for risk factors it can be either biopsied or followed over a period of time. As the possibilities are diverse, please follow up with your physician to determine the best course of action.

what's a difference (or there is no difference) between 2mm calcified pulmonary nodule which has not changed in size 2 to 3 years(stable) and 2mm pulmonary granuloma  which has not changed in size 2 to 3 years(stable).thank you?

Features: A granulomatous lesion narrows the differential of a lung opacification. If there is mediastinal adenopathy, a node may be biopsied. TB screening test should be performed. If calcified, the lesion may indicate a resolved infection or process. Since the size is stable, this lessens the concern for a fast growing tumor or infection that is not controlled. Pulmonary nodule: It depends on your medical history, i.e. risk factors or other clinical conditions that would make the small nodule more concerning. At your age, if you have no significant medical history that might relate to a lung nodule, it is likely of very little or no concern.  Talk to your doc about the results.

Probably so: Biopsy of a lung nodule depends on the size and location. A nodule smaller than 1 cm is difficult to biopsy. A nodule located too close to the heart or main blood vessels is difficult to biopsy. A nodule too adjacent to the ribs may also be difficult to biopsy. In your case ct follow up at intervals by established guidelines may be considered.

what is the definition or description of: pet-ct pulmonary nodule?

Lung mass: If a lung mass is seen on chest xray or ct scan and the patient has a moderate risk of malignancy, often the next test is a positron emission tomography (pet scan). This test detects masses with high metabolic rates.  Around 95% of patients with a malignant nodule will have a positive pet scan.  It is falsely positive in about 21% of patients, meaning that it will suggest cancer when it is not.

pulmonary nodule appears to be benign.  seeing pulmonologist.  should i bring up the emphysema at the same time?

Most definately.: I think your doc will likely pick up on it, but yes hey have to know all your medical issues.
