Steroids,immunosupre: The drugs which are used are steroids like Prednisone in high doses, sometimes immunosupresants , responce to treatment is variable and patients requre continuosly oxygen and may need lung transplantation if nothing else works.

Possibilities...: Pulmonary fibrosis is due to scarring  in the lungs. There is no  specific therapy for the fibrosis itself but the cough may be related to bronchospasm. This can be treated with bronchodilator and steroid inhalers which could improve the cough and the related shortness of breath. He should see his doctor for diagnosis and treatment. If he smokes, he needs to quit! good luck!

Depends on the cause: There is no good treatment to reverse pulmonary fibrosis but the progression may be thwarted if one knows the trigger mechanism.  I presume that this person is under the care of a board certified pulmonologist who may prescribe oxygen for the condition.

Scars: In nflammation from any cause in so much area of the lung, inflammatory cells recruit the fibrocytes (scar cells). These cells lay down fibers to wall of the inflammations but because there is diffuse inflammation, they end up laying down fiber in the interstitial spaces in may areas. It thickens the areas in between the air sacs and the blood vessels. That is fibrosis, if limited area it's scar.

NO: It's adequate but normal oxygen for healthy people on room air is &gt;95%. People on oxygen should use the smallest amount (liter per minute) that gets them &gt;90%. Many people can use a smaller amount at rest and a higher flow with exercise.
